Duane is seeking an opportunity to play a hands-on and/or lead role on an SAP implementation project. He has more than 20 years of application development experience, including 15 years supporting SAP implementations in releases 2.x, 3.x, 4.6, 4.7, and ECC 5.0 and ECC 6.0 environments. His areas of expertise include technical team leadership, technical analysis, design specifications, application (ABAP) development, data migration, new system cutover, and release upgrades.

 

Duane has been self-employed as the principal of Grand Valley Consulting, LLC, specializing in SAP technology consulting for eight years. Before founding his own consulting practice, he was a Sr. Manager / SAP technology consultant at Deloitte Consulting for approximately 7 years. As an SAP technology professional, he has played both leadership and hands-on roles on large SAP implementations at public sector (Defense Department), manufacturing, energy, consumer goods, advertising, and pharmaceutical clients.

 

Duane has played lead roles (software development and data migration) on numerous SAP projects, including three global implementations and approximately twelve site rollouts.

 

Duanes experience prior to consulting included more than 15 years of leadership and hands-on roles in application system development, information technology and large project management, primarily in manufacturing and financial environments. Three of these years in industry included SAP implementations in a large manufacturing environment, where he led the ABAP development team. Duane has extensive experience in client server, mainframe, and package application environments on a wide variety of hardware and software platforms.

 

Duane is a US citizen, lives in the Grand Rapids (southwest) Michigan area, and has a US government security clearance.

 


 

CONSULTING EXPERIENCE Independent Consultant, May 2006 present



U.S. Department of Defense Sr. SAP/ABAP Developer (April 2010 - present), SAP ECC 6.0, CRM 7.0.

My client is a major systems integrator / SAP implementation partner, which is responsible for the roll-out of new functionality (Order Fulfillment, Financials, and Technical Quality) for the U.S. Department of Defense, using SAP ECC and CRM. I am a member of the SAP RICE (development) team, which is responsible for the design, development, deployment, and production support of extensions, custom reports, interfaces, output forms, and enhancements.

My responsibilities include the technical design, development, and testing of ABAP based solutions, problem analysis and defect resolution, run-time analysis and performance tuning, training and mentoring of client team members, and quality assurance for the work of other members of the RICE development team.

My SAP/ECC technical development and experiences on this project have included interfaces (using IDOCs, BDCs, BAPIs), custom transactions (ALV reports, classical reports, dialogs), enhancements (BADIs, classical user exits), and OO development (global classes and methods).

My SAP/CRM technical development and experiences on this project have included BDocs, WEB/UI and AET, and enhancements (BADIs).



U.S. Department of Defense Sr. SAP/ABAP Developer (October 2008 March 2010), SAP ECC 5.0

My client was a major systems integrator / SAP implementation partner, responsible for the implementation of SAP ECC 5.0 for the U.S. Department of Defense. I was a member of a large SAP RICE multi-site development team, which was responsible for the design and development of custom reports, interfaces, conversions, and enhancements. My responsibilities included the design and development of ABAP based solutions, problem analysis and defect resolution, along with the mentoring and quality assurance for the work of other members of the RICE development team.

My work products included interface development (both flat files and Idocs), data conversion program development, SmartForm development, Output determination routines, BADI development, development of custom classes and methods, and development of ABAP reports (both classical and ALV).

The SAP functional areas of this implementation included SD (CRM), MM/PP (APO/SCM), FI, and BW.



Office Furniture Manufacturer - Lead SAP/ABAP Developer (July 2007 September 2008), SAP R/3 4.7

I was a member of the clients Product Data team, and served as the lead developer for a new custom SAP application. I was responsible for the requirements gathering, analysis, design, coding and testing of a custom application which was ported from a Borland C-Builder / Oracle DB environment into SAP. This included the development of a custom application within SAP, including dialog transactions, function modules, and custom transactions. The new application database consisted of approximately 60 SAP Z-tables.

I also provided help-desk support, performing technical analysis and ABAP software development to resolve technical issues within the clients production environment.



Automotive Manufacturer (Commercial and Military Vehicles) - Lead SAP/ABAP Developer (January June 2007), SAP R/3 4.6d

I was responsible for the analysis, design, coding, and testing of various ABAP development objects (custom ABAP reports, dialog transactions, SapScripts, SmartForms), in support of SD, MM, PP, and WM modules in a 4.6c environment. I worked closely with business users of SAP to analyze and gather their requirements, and to design, development, and implement appropriate SAP technical solutions. My responsibilities included writing technical specifications for, and reviewing the work of other members of the development team. My assignments included the development of new custom reports, performing run-time analysis and tuning on custom reports and transactions, and the design of modifications for several reports, SapScripts, and extract programs.

My additional responsibilities included assisting the client with the creation of ABAP development standards and procedures, and providing technical assistance to other members of the clients SAP technical team and business user community.



Pharmaceutical (Over-the-Counter drugs) Manufacturer Sr. SAP/ABAP Developer (May December 2006), SAP R/3 4.6d

I was responsible for the design, coding, and testing of various ABAP development objects (custom ABAP reports, user-exits, SapScripts, SmartForms), in support of SD, MM, PP, WM, and FI/CO modules in a 4.6c environment. I worked closely with Business Analysts to analyze and gather business requirements, and designed, developed, and implemented appropriate SAP technical solutions, using both classic ABAP and ABAP/OO programming models. My assignments included implementation of BADIs in SRM (Supplier Relationship Management), converting programs to access both archived and active (R/3) data, modifications and fixes to existing report programs (both classic and ALV reports), custom dialogs and user-exits, implementation of run-time improvement modifications to several ABAP programs, and development of several complex output documents using SapScript and SmartForms.

My additional responsibilities included assisting the client with the creation of ABAP development standards and procedures, in preparation for a planned ECC 5.0 implementation.

Manufacturing Client SAP NW2004, ECC 5.0, SCM, CRM, BI, XI implementation Development Team Lead / Sr. ABAP Developer (5 months)

I was the software development team lead for a very large project implementing SAPs new SPM (Supply Parts Management) solution. This project was in the Business Blueprint phase, and my tasks included the creation of software development standards, defining software development processes and procedures, designing templates for the documentation of functional and technical requirements, and assembling the software development team. Our team was responsible for the development of interfaces (using IDOCs and XI Middleware), data conversions, enhancements (BAdIs and user exits), reports (ALV and classic ABAP), and output forms (using Smartforms). The functional modules implemented included WM (EWM), MM, and SD (CRM).



Advertising Client Global SAP R/3 4.7, SAP BW implementation Development Team Lead / Sr. ABAP Developer (10 months)

I was a lead developer, responsible for technical analysis, design, programming, testing, and quality assurance for several complex objects, including RFC / WSDL based interfaces and custom ALV reports. I also served as the development lead, mentoring and assisting other members of a 10 person development team. The SAP functional modules included FI, CO, SD, and PS.

Health Care Software Provider Project Manager (13 months)

I was responsible for managing software implementation projects at customer sites (hospitals), for a health care software provider. In this role, I was responsible for managing the planning, installation, testing, training, and implementation tasks required to successfully implement both packaged and custom software solutions. The software provided by this client delivered process management (work-flow) and content management (image storage and retrieval) solutions to hospitals in the US and Canada. The application runs on AS400 and Unix platforms, using DB2/UDB, MS Sequel or Oracle back-end databases.



Material Handling Systems Manufacturer Lead SAP R/3 ABAP Developer (14 months)

I was responsible for the design, coding, and testing of multiple ABAP development objects (real-time interfaces, enhancements, data conversions, reports), in support of SAP FI, CO, MM, PP, and WM modules in a 4.6c environment. I worked closely with SAP Business Analysts to analyze requirements, and to develop and implement appropriate SAP technical solutions. I researched and developed standards for converting custom reports to ALV (SAPs Application List Viewer). I lead the client in the development of ABAP programming standards and technical specification templates. I was the lead developer for a complex set of interfaces which linked multiple engineering design and modeling systems to SD, VC, and PS functionality within R/3. In this role, I was responsible for the design, coding, and testing of this interface, which used IDoc, ALE, RFC, and BAPI technologies.



Pharmaceutical Manufacturer SAP R/3, SAP APO, Custom Development Supply Chain Team Technical Lead (3 months)

I led a team of SAP technical analysts in providing ABAP / application development support for a clients Supply Chain process team. Our team was responsible for the technical analysis, design, programming, and testing of custom objects (reports, SapScripts, enhancements, and interfaces). The SAP functional modules supported include MM, WM, IM, PP, QM, and APO.

I led a team of client server developers in the design, programming, and testing of custom Visual Basic / Oracle applications, which were developed to enhance a third party Warehouse Management system.

Energy Client SAP R/3, SAP BW implementation Data Migration Team Lead (2 months)

I co-led a 12 person client data migration team during the Business Blueprint (design) phase of an SAP implementation. The SAP R/3 module scope included Customer Care and Service (CCS), Sales and Distribution (SD), Materials Management and Production Planning (MM/PP), Warehouse and Inventory Management (WM/IM), Human Resources (HR), and Finance / Controlling (FI/CO). I served as the SAP technical (ABAP) subject matter expert, worked closely with business process teams in the development of functional specifications for data conversions, developed strategies for data cleansing and conversion, and developed the team work plan for the Realization (construction and testing) phases of the project.



Consumer Business Client Global SAP R/3, SAP APO, Vista (CRM), and GEIS EDI middleware implementation Application Development Team Lead (25 months)

I led a 22 person ABAP development team (16 consultant, 6 client) in a three wave global implementation of SAP R/3 (4.6c), SAP APO, and Vista (CRM) at a large packaged goods manufacturer. The SAP R/3 scope included SD, MM/PP, and FI/CO modules. I led the design, ABAP development, testing, CTS migration, and implementation of data conversions, interfaces (BDC, ALE/IDOC), EDI transactions, functionality enhancements, User Exits, SAPScripts, and custom reports. The ABAP development team was spread across 4 sites, and 3 countries. My other responsibilities included the management of the data migration and the system cutover plan.



Manufacturing Client Global SAP R/3 implementation ABAP Team Lead (24 months)

 

I led a 12 person ABAP development team for a global SAP R/3 (3.1i) implementation at a large chemical manufacturing company. The SAP R/3 scope included SD, MM/PP, and FI/CO modules. Implementation included two rollouts in the U.S., and one in Europe. I led the design, ABAP development, testing, CTS migration, and implementation of data conversions, interfaces, functionality enhancements, SAPScripts, and custom reports. I managed data migration activities during system cutover. The application development team was located in both the U.S. and Europe.



Manufacturing Client SAP R/3 implementation ABAP Team Lead (9 months)

 

I led a 6 person ABAP development team for an SAP R/3 (3.1h) implementation at a large manufacturing company. The SAP R/3 scope included SD, MM/PP, Variant Configurator, and FI/CO modules. I led the design, ABAP development, testing, CTS migration, and implementation of data conversions, interfaces, functionality enhancements, and custom reports. I designed, coded, tested, and executed customer master data conversion programs.

Deloitte Consulting Business development and internal projects (6 months)

I participated in business development activities at various public sector and manufacturing clients. I led proposal development teams in response to three state government client custom software development RFPs, participated on proposal development teams in response to two automotive manufacturing client RFPs. I assisted the firms remote development center in the creation of off-site software development procedures, and served as the interim development manager for two remote ERP implementation projects. I co-led a team in the development of an ERP / Middleware integration whitepaper.

I managed a 7 person ABAP development team for an R/3 (2.x, 3.x) implementation. The SAP R/3 scope included SD, MM, Variant Configurator, and FI/CO modules. I led the design, development, testing, CTS migration, and implementation of data conversions, interfaces, functionality enhancements, SAPScripts, and custom reports.

I designed, developed, implemented and supported material master interfaces to legacy systems. I also led the ABAP development team for an R/3 3.0 to 3.1 release upgrade.



New technology analysis, design and prototyping (2 years)

I led a development team which was responsible for evaluation of emerging client server technologies. This team was responsible for design and development of application prototypes using development tools and products such as Sybase, Oracle, Borland C++, PowerBuilder, SQL Windows, and MS Access.

I led a large technology team in the design of a client server based asset management system, used by end-customers, dealers, independent designers, and field sales people. The project team included multiple third-party consulting partners, spread across three states.



Information technology management, systems analysis, application development, production system support (12 years)

I managed a team of 10 systems analysts and programmers. This team was responsible for development and support of an EDI network and associated applications, email system support, product databases, and other applications supporting a network of 550 dealers.

I led several large application development projects, including dealer electronic ordering (EDI), dealer email, and electronic product database. I also co-led a team which implemented the first EDI transactions and network at Steelcase

I installed and supported various IBM SNA (VTAM, NCP, CICS) network software products.

I designed and programmed various customer service related applications, including shipment planning, remote order entry, and stock order processing, in an IBM mainframe environment
