THIS RESUME IS NOT UP TO DATE. (I'VE BEEN WORKING NON-STOP FOR THE PAST 15 YEARS) IF YOU ARE REALLY INTERESTED, JUST CALL ME AND I CAN ANSWER QUESTIONS. THAT WAY, WE DO NOT WASTE EACH OTHER'S TIME.
SO DO NOT ASK FOR AN UP TO DATE RESUME TO BE SENT TO YOU. THIS IS IT. THE REST IS ONE-ON-ONE BY PHONE OR SPECIFIC EMAIL QUESTIONS.

Specifically I am interested in mainframe projects (maintenance, development, etc.). Any arrangements should be
made 3 months before manpower required. I bring over 20 years
of business and IS experience into a project.
Now I have considerable experience in the wonderful world of .NET - conversion from a mainframe and now ongoing maintenance.

am now in my 18th year of living and doing business in Europe
based in Switzerland. I have a Swiss Permis C.

Education: B.Sc. (Hon) 1965 Mathematics and Chemistry from
Queen's University in Kingston Ontario, Canada.
M. Mathematics 1967 Numerical Analysis and Computer Science
from University of Waterloo, Waterloo Ontario, Canada

Languages: English(MT), German, French (not fluent but manage OK)

Other Languages: COBOL (many flavours), PL/I (rusty),
370 Assembler, MARK IV (rusty), SQL, TRACE, Powerbuilder,
various BASICs (not really interested in BASIC).

Operating Systems:IBM Mainframes (OS/390, MVS, DOS, etc.).
Over the years I have also worked on other systems such as Harris,
UNIX, PC's, Nixdorf, BCT.

Typical Environment: CICS/IMS/DB2 applications, OS/390, MVS, DOS,
TSO, TUBES, Endevor, Expeditor, Ezetest, Intertest, Panvalet,
WSF, SDSF, SDF, SDF II, ISPF, Xedit, SPITAB, Hourglass,
TRACE (mini) real-time document processing, S-Designor, EDIFACT, etc.

Typical Tasks: designing, coding, installing, maintaining
large complicated multi-national mainframe systems.
(the more complicated, the more fun). Also training of users.
Conversions of systems.

Typical Applications: financial (accounting, order entry,
portfolio management, etc.), logistics, inventory (including
robotics control and bar code expertise), real-time processing
(credit card slip processing), import/export, telecommunications
(X.25 and X.32 expertise world-wide).

Typical Industry Sector: Pharmaceutical, Food/Tobacco, Petroleum,
Financial Institution, UN Agency, etc.

History: Working as a freelance programmer/systems analyst
since graduation. Saw the world during the first few years so
I am quite aware of conditions around the world and know how
to adapt (if it is possible - some places you can forget).

Geographic Experience and Preferences:
Past and current: Canada, Europe, Zimbabwe, Czech Republic,
Greece. Projects in Europe, far east, North America, Australia,
New Zealand and parts of Africa would be considered.

Major clients (past and present) - General Motors, ESSO, Squibb,
Bristol-Myers Squibb, Philip Morris, ILO (International Labour
Office), ITC (part of GATT).

Generally, my contacts with clients are long-term since I really
do like maintenance and enhancements to existing systems.
That may mean a few days a month, a few hours a month, a few
non-stop weeks. I like variety. Some of the above clients
have been using my services for over 20 years - so I must do
it right most of the time. When one works for one's self, that
is the incentive.

My past business experience means that start-up time is pretty
fast because I bring business expertise as well as technical
expertise into a project. In most cases, very little in-house
time is required to get me up to speed. Usually 1 day is provided
free of charge.

Facilities: full 3270 terminal for X.25 (NPSI) connection or ISDN.
5250 for AS400 (X.25 or ISDN), Vtxxx for UNIX . This permits me
to be on call and perform remote maintenance for clients.

A typical system which I maintain will have 2-300 programs in it.

Most recent projects (and on-going):

A long term project (it kept growing) in the MVS (now OS/390)
environment which consisted of bringing an already large European
system up to a point where it it could be used world-wide 24
hours per day from Australia to South America taking into
account business requirements of the different regions.
During this time, system has gone from mix of VSAM, IMS and DB2 to pure DB2. There are now about 600 programs in that system. It is used to provide logistics support, product purchase and financial planning for
10 digit budgets. i.e. it is a company mission-critical system.

At the same time as above but for another company:

Maintenance and many enhancements (mainframe environment) to a
pharmaceutical pre-billing order entry system. This is also a
system with 400 programs in it. Many enhancements revolved around
pricing (a very complicated process in pharma), government
requirements, introduction of EDI, warehouse management,
inventory control, bar code controls and labelling, weight
controls, special splitting of orders automatically, etc.
In the meantime, I also made a complete analysis of the system
with respect to going to SAP/R3 SD and related modules.

This contract is on a on-request basis. i.e. order by order.
I have worked with the client for nearly 30 years and know
their order entry system better than their employees. Once
again OE is a mission-critical system (no orders processed
= no cash flow, and we are talking millions per day here).
They are quite happy to have a guru (me) on call rather than on
payroll. For the amount of money the system generates, the cost
of maintenance is a pittance. I am quite happy with the
arrangement also. Often this type of maintenance is all that
is needed for a system if the company only realises that fact.
In most cases I am able to do everything from Nyon by 3270
access over X.25.

From time to time I have worked on some small PC based systems
for smaller firms. But, my real environment is the large
multi-national type of business.

Tariff: very simple. It is the same no matter what task(s)
are assigned to me. Any contract will be between the client
company and the consulting company which will offer my services.

There are 3 types of contracts of interest.

1. on-call - services supplied when you need them. no retainer.
short duration (less than 2 weeks)
2. part-time services - a fixed number of hours per week are
guaranteed to the project
3. full time on a project

I prefer type 1 and 2 and require no minimum commitment.

For type 3 a minimum project duration: 480 hours (3 months)
Depending on the location, there could be some travel costs added.

For the moment, European projects are preferred, but I am
open to suggestions.
