Work History

October 12, 1999 to December 7, 1999 Short-term contract to NTP Software, Inc., Manchester, NH, using RoboHELP and What's This? Help Composer to write topic and context sensitive help for a new GUI interface. Also, designed and created a first-draft of a product demo for their web site using a shareware program, Multimedia Builder, and Full Shot 99 for the screen shots; edited and formatted on-line help for Application Programming Interface routines for Quota Manager Software Developers' Kit.

September 15, 1999 to October 1999 Short-term contract to Micronetics in Hudson NH using Adobe FrameMaker to update existing hardware technical manuals.

December 1998 to April 1999 Under a five-month contract to Perimeter Technology in Manchester NH, wrote a new manual for a new product, the Net-VU Internet ACD Reference Guide, using Word95. Net-VU is a software application that enables Internet chat sessions between Web users and a company's sales and/or customer-service agents. Writing the manual required extensive interviews with the design and development engineers and at least a cursory understanding of firewall security issues, LANs, SCO UNIX, Java applets, and ACD call centers. The manual covers installation under Windows NT and UNIX systems, describes how to create an HTML form for the Caller Applet, how to use the Agent Applet and how to configure the whole system for an ACD call center. It also includes a thorough index.

October 1998 to December 1998 Under a short-term contract through Electronic Data Systems (EDS) in Lowell MA for Compaq Computer Corporation, used Word97 to edit and reformat a proposal and VAX DOCUMENT to update release notes and an installation guide for the DECwindows product.

October 1995 to October 1998 Worked on the Software Contractors' Guild web site, http://www.scguild.com, formatting and editing entries in the company list using HTML and responding to email queries. This project required use of a Pentium PC with Windows NT operating system.

January 1987 to October 1987 Worked as a contract technical writer preparing user documentation for DECnet to AT&T's Datakit network interface. Also wrote the user documentation and specification document for FileBridge for DEC/EDI. Both contracts required use of DOCUMENT, a text markup and formatting language, the VMS operating system, a VT240 and VAX 785.

March 1984 to December 1986 As a Senior Software Technical Writer for Digital Equipment Corporation in Merrimack NH, wrote user and programmer documentation for VAX VTX, Digital's videotex software, and VAX VALU, Videotex Application Link Utilities. Wrote Versions 1 and 2 of the VTX Database Design Guide, a release and an update to the VTX page creator's guide, and a programmer's manual. The programmer's manual describes how to customize VTX keypad functions and messages, write new terminal control modules, and use the product's 3270 datastream and X.29 support. Guided the books through every stage from first draft to camera-ready output. Wrote installation guides, release notes, indexes and online help. Served as documentation project leader for one release. Samples available upon request.

November 1982 to September 1983 As a contract technical writer to Development Science Services of Portsmouth NH, wrote user documentation describing custom-written applications for the U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor and Long Beach. Included three user's guides and a programmer's guide to using an early database management system. Also wrote reports, letters and proposals. Samples available upon request.
