3/87‑Present                 Miller Systems, Inc., Mokena, IL 60448.                                        Position: President/Consultant

 

Miller Systems specializes in designing and implementing customized client-server and/or web-based computer software for a variety of business applications. I provide project management, architecture, system analysis, data warehousing, mentoring, programming, quality control, documentation, and operator training. We seek to leverage our skills in Software Development, Project Management, Package Integration, and Accounting/Finance skills to help firms increase profitability and improve customer service, be it for Fortune-500 firms or small-to-mid-sized businesses, using the most appropriate technologies for the task at hand. My consulting assignments have included:

 

·         01/06 – Present for a publicly-held software tools vendor. Using VB.NET 2005, SQL Server 2000, Oracle 10g Database, MS Access 2003, Siebel v6, and Pivotal CRM, working together with the programming team, I implemented a conversion from customized versions of the legacy Siebel CRM to the target Pivotal CRM software applications. I created a logged, reproducible, re-runnable software framework utilizing customized Visual Basic .NET code, database queries, views, stored procedures, and DTS packages to implement the conversion process. I validated the new target datasets with customized, automated tools to help identify any potential data quality problems. I served as Sr. Developer on this project.

 

·         03/05 – 11/05 for an Investment Management firm. Using VB.NET 2003, SQL Server 2000, and MS Access 2003, I created, bug-fixed, and performance-tuned various financial reports for this investment management firm indicating client’s financial standings. Was able to achieve a 90% reduction in run times in certain cases. Also converted and rewrote their existing CRM system. I served as a Project Manager, Sr. Developer, and Account Representative.

 

·         09/05 – 10/05 for FFE. Using Crystal Reports v11 XI, VB.NET 2003, SQL Server 2000, and MS Access 2003, I helped to integrate various vertical-market systems, including Southware, Life-Safety Inspector, and InterGIS, I worked on various data importing, validation, and cleansing projects I served as a Project Manager, Sr. Developer, and Account Representative.

 

·         04/05 – 05/05 for a small software and consulting firm in Chicago. This system was built upon a platform using C#, SQL Server 2000, Microsoft Access 2003, Microsoft SharePoint, and Crystal Reports v10. I served as a Project Manager, and Account Representative, with two additional Senior Programmers working on the team for a system development effort aimed at creating a customized data collection and reporting system for one of their major clients.

 

·         02/05 – 03/05 for MCH. Using SQL Server 2000, Microsoft Access 2003, and Adobe Acrobat / Designer / Distiller v7.0, I served as the sole Developer for a custom system designed to print out the credit reports of a variety of commercial accounts for clients of this small financial information services firm. 

 

·         05/04 – 01/05 for Robert Bosch (part-time). This system was built upon a platform using Visual Basic.NET ( VB.NET ), GigaSoft, and Infragistics tools, I served as Account Representative and Project Manager, with one additional Senior Programmer working on the team for a system development effort aimed at creating a Laboratory Information Management System with specialized Data Acquisition Hardware (Deweytron) with both a Graphical Charting and Table-Oriented Analysis component for the Mechanical Engineers to use in their analysis of the unique characteristics of the Auto Parts that they routinely test for the major automobile manufacturers.

 

·         02/04 – 01/05 for an Automobile Retailer (part-time). This system was built upon a platform using Visual Basic.NET ( VB.NET ) with Compact Framework, Windows CE ( Pocket PC ), ASP.NET, BlackBook USA data, and SQL Server 2000, I served as Account Representative and Project Manager, with one additional Senior Programmer working on the team for a system development effort aimed at creating an integrated system for capturing vehicle information with digital imaging on a Pocket PC (Windows CE) unit, and replicating that data into a SQL Server 2000 database via a Wireless 802.11b connection. This data is then transmitted both to a commercial third-party website for presentation to customers, and to a hosted site which also presents the vehicle information to customers.

 

·         07/03 – present at a small Medical Equipment Imaging Vendor. Using DICOM, HL7, MS SQL Server 2000, ASP.NET, Visual Studio 2003, Visual Basic .NET ( VB.NET ), ADO.NET, and LeadTools Imaging Components, I served as project manager and senior developer of this system to handle Patient Management and Video Image Capture, and Internet-based transmissions of medical images.

 

I was the Project Manager and one of the Senior Developers on the project, working in conjunction with the technical supervisor of the firm, and another subcontractor with experience in DICOM software applications.

 

·         10/02 – 05/03 at RayTrans Distribution Services. Using MS Access 2002, ADO, and MS MapPoint 2002, I served as Sr. Technical Advisor for their “White-Lightning” system for management of their freight-forwarding shipments.

 

I was a Senior Developer on the project, working in conjunction with the owner of the firm.

 

·         05/02 – 09/02 at a Small Software Vendor. Using MS Visual C++.NET, ADO.NET, Windows Forms, XML, Windows XP Professional, TIBCO, and a mixture of Oracle, DB2, and SQL Server 2000, I developed a system for online trading of financial instruments executed by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

 

I was the lead developer on the project, working in conjunction with the project manager.

 

·         10/01 – 04/02 at Aon Insurance. Using MS Access 2002, ADO, Adaytum, Oracle v8.1, and SQL Server 2000, I developed a data entry and reporting system for entering, maintaining, and reporting enterprise-wide budget data.

 

I was sole developer for this a portion of this project, and a senior resource in a team of 22 developers, QA, trainers, and a PWC project manager. I worked with the Financial Team to gather system requirements, perform testing, train users, develop documentation, and provide technical support for end-users. I worked with the IT Dept. Staff to gain access to the enterprise data stores and transfer data as required.

 

·         07/01 – 09/01 at Grant Thornton LLP. Using MS Visual InterDev 6.0, ASP, Visual Basic 6, InstallShield, Crystal Reports v8.0, FrontPage 2000, HTML/DHTML, CSS, JavaScript, VBScript, ADO, XML, XSL, MTS, SQL Server 7, and IIS 5.0, I developed an intranet-based data entry system for entering and maintaining customer data for the accounting firm, integrating this information into their CMS Accounting and CRM package database, using object-oriented multi-tiered development for scalability.

 

I was sole developer for the VI6 and VB6 development work, and integrated custom Active-X controls into the data entry web pages. I mentored junior staff team members, and assisted in the Crystal Reports development.

 

·         12/00 – 05/01 at Aon Insurance. Using MS Visual InterDev 6.0, ASP, HomeSite 4.5, HTML/DHTML, CSS, JavaScript, VBScript, ADO, SQL Server 2000, Site Server 3.0, and IIS 4.0, I was lead developer of a global knowledge-sharing system aimed at multiple specialized communities of professionals within the enterprise. This site incorporated user-driven document uploads and downloads, discussion databases, document indexing, searching, and retrieval, archiving, and categorization. I also maintained the global corporate phone system during this period, as well as created system documentation, including Entity-Relationship Diagrams developed with MS Visio 2000.

 

I was lead developer for the VI6 development work, using Rapid Application Development (RAD) techniques, as well as mentoring more junior staff team members in ASP, JavaScript, and database development skills. This project required working as part of the internal corporate web development team, including web page designers, graphics designers, user liaisons, and other consultants.

 

§         10/00 – 12/00 at Motorola. Using MS Visual InterDev 6.0, ASP, ADO, Visual Basic 6.0, MTS, OOD / OOP, COM, XML, XSL, HTML/DHTML, CSS, JavaScript, VBScript, SQL Server 7.0, IIS 5.0, Microsoft Posting Acceptor, and CDONTS on a load-balanced web of Win2000 servers, I was project manager, business analyst, and lead developer of a customer-facing web site to facilitate document sharing, communication, and collaboration between a project group at Motorola and one of its primary customers. The site incorporated customer-driven document uploads and downloads, automatic email generation on certain error conditions, cross-browser compatibility. I also created system documentation, including Entity-Relationship Diagrams developed with Embarcadero Technologies’ ER/Studio.

 

I was project manager and lead developer for the VI6 and VB6 development work. This project required working directly with the Motorola project sponsor to understand the system requirements, develop the web site, and deliver “fit and finish” user interface improvements.

 

§         12/99 – 9/00 at FTI Consulting, Inc. Using Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 with Win32 APIs, COM, OOD / OOP, ADO and ActiveReports on Win98, I was a senior developer of data entry, middleware classes, and reporting for their TrialMax product that enables case preparation of Documents, PowerPoints, and full-motion video for courtroom presentation to the judge and jury. This has been used in high-profile cases such as the Microsoft anti-trust trial, tobacco litigation and more. I also created an integrated automatic charting system using PowerPoint, Excel, and Access for a system that captures Jury Questionnaire data entered in PowerPoint, saved in Access, and graphed in Excel, and reported in PowerPoint.

 

I was a senior developer for the VB6 development work. This project required working directly with the product manager to understand the system requirements and “fit and finish” user interface improvements.

 

§         9/99 – 11/99 at Advance Health Technologies, Inc. Using Microsoft Visual InterDev 6.0, Visual Basic 6.0, Visual C++ 6.0, Crystal Reports v7.0, ASP, 3-tier Architecture, OOD / OOP, HTML / DHTML, CSS, VBScript, JavaScript, COM / DCOM, ADO, IIS 4.0, and SQL Server 7.0 on Win NT 4.0, I created data entry and reporting forms for this product that implemented electronic delivery of medical prescriptions to providers via the Internet. I also developed and maintained Active-X components that drew data from SQL Server 7.0, and fed it into Visual Interdev, and produced reports using Crystal Reports and direct HTML output.

 

I was a business analyst and senior developer for the VI6/VB development work, using Rapid Application development (RAD) techniques. This project required working directly with the IS staff and the product manager to understand the system requirements and “fit and finish” user interface improvements.

 

§         5/99 – 8/99 at Japha International, Inc. Using Microsoft Visual InterDev 6.0, Visual Basic 6.0, ASP, HTML / DHTML, CSS, VBScript, JavaScript, OOD / OOP, Crystal Reports v7.0, COM, MTS, IIS 4.0, ADO, and SQL Server 7.0 on Win NT 4.00 and AS/400 DB2 / 400, I worked with end-users and the corporate IS department in order to create a project tracking application that allows for entry, maintenance, what-if scenarios, and reporting using Crystal Reports and HTML on various telephone equipment installation projects, based on a conversion from an existing project management application built in PowerBuilder 5.0. 

 

I was the project leader, business analyst, and major technical resource for the VI6/VB development work and porting. This project required working directly with the IS staff and the end-users, using RAD and JAD techniques, to create the system requirements and “fit and finish” user interface improvements.

 

§         2/99 – 4/99 at Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co.. Using Microsoft Access 97, and Visual Basic 5.0 with Win32 APIs on Win 95/98, I worked with end-users and the corporate IS department in order to create a project tracking application that allows for entry, maintenance, and reporting on various product development projects. 

 

I was the project leader, business analyst, and sole technical resource for the VB/Access development work. This project required working directly with the IS user liaison and the end-users to create the system requirements.

 

§         5/98 – 1/99 at First Chicago / Bank One. Using Microsoft Access 97, Visual Basic 6.0 with Win32 APIs, ODBC drivers, OOD / OOP, Active-X, Business Objects, and SQL Server on Win NT 4.0 integrating with IBM OS/390 mainframes running VSAM and DB2, and Tandem Non-Stop servers, I created a data warehouse for ATM machine data. It allows for entry, import, maintenance, and reporting of this data. I also worked on other corporate data warehousing and production support applications.

 

I was the project leader, business analyst, and senior technical resource for the VB/Access and integration development work, using Rapid Application Development (RAD) techniques, working with other developers. This project required working directly with the various end-users to create the system requirements, and working with other IS staffers in order to create interfaces to the legacy systems. Weekly status reports and development cost estimates were created as required.

 

§         10/96 – 5/98 at Aon Insurance. Using Microsoft Access 97, Visual Basic 5.0 with Win32 APIs, ODBC drivers, Lotus Notes, and Replic-Action on Windows NT 4.0, I redesigned and programmed the insurance sales reporting, bonus calculations and reporting, and budget calculation and reporting systems for the entire large brokerage group (over 500 sales reps). A data warehouse containing sales data for over 5 years of sales data was created, based on this application.

 

I was the project leader, business analyst, and sole technical resource for the Access/VB development work, working with other Notes developers, using Rapid Application Development techniques. This project required working directly with the divisional controller and senior accountants in order to determine the system requirements, and to involve them in the testing of the accuracy of the reports based on the data warehouse. I created all of the data entry forms, lengthy and complex bonus calculations which were then fed into payroll. Weekly status reports and development cost estimates were created as required.

 

§         3/96 – 9/96 at Frankel & Co. Using Microsoft Access V2.0 on Windows 3.1, I designed and programmed many entry forms and reports for their various clients marketing projects.

 

I was the account manager and lead developer working with the data processing manager, as well as all of the account managers, delivering contest reports, promotional item distribution lists, and contest winners on a rapid basis. Expected turnaround time in this organization is a few hours rather than a few months.

 

§         9/95 – 3/96 at a mid-sized consulting firm. Using embedded SQL inside of both C language and VAX-BASIC language on DEC VAX/VMS, tying to the CA-INGRES v6.0 database server engine, I programmed medical billing reporting applications.

 

I was a team member creating and deploying this enterprise application.

 

§         8/95 – 11/95 at Ernst & Young. Using Advanced Revelation on MS-DOS, I was account manager, project manager, business analyst, and lead developer for a sophisticated financial application regarding the application of tax-loss carry-forwards in accordance with the current IRS regulations.

 

§         5/95 – 11/95 at Inland Steel. Using Microsoft Access V2.0 on Windows 3.1, and integration with the IBM OS/390 mainframe, I was a team member on the team that designed and programmed complex entry forms, with over 50 reports for Human Resources / Labor Mgmt system.

 

I was the account manager, project leader, business analyst, and lead developer, working with my wife Marilyn and one other consultant. I wrote the system requirements documentation, implemented the data conversion from the original MS-DOS system, and created a large number of the reports. Marilyn trained the users, interfaced with the IS group, and created the balance of the reports. 

 

§         4/95 – 7/95 for a small consulting firm. Using Sybase SQL Server, Informix On-Line, and Unidata connectivity tools on IBM RS/6000 AIX, I programmed a data transferring mechanism between these two databases using triggers and stored procedures in both environments.

 

§         1/95 – 4/95 at Bell Land Improvement Co. Using Microsoft Access V2.0 on Windows 3.1, I designed and programmed a Job Costing System for their small construction firm. This system provided direct costs and profitability analysis on all of their various contracts. We exported data from a UNIX-based accounting package into this application.

 

I was the account manager, project leader, business analyst, and senior developer working with my wife Marilyn. I wrote the system requirements documentation, created certain data entry forms and reports, and trained the users.

 

§         1/93 – 12/93 at GE Capital Railcar Services. Using Advanced Revelation on MS-DOS, I designed and programmed many customization of their Ceridian Human Resources system in the areas of data collection, bonus, COBRA, and pension reporting.

 

I was the project leader, business analyst, and sole technical resource on this project, which involved working directly with the Pension and Benefits Administrators to gather the systems requirements, and so that they could test the reports for accuracy.

 

§         3/87 – 2/91 at Chapman and Cutler. Using Advanced Revelation on MS-DOS, I designed and programmed an Investment Portfolio Management System that computed any applicable arbitrage rebate amounts required for their municipal clients, according to current IRS regulations. This system generated nearly $1mil/yr revenue for the firm.

 

I was account manager, project leader, business analyst, and senior consultant, leading two other programmers. I created the system requirements documentation, and worked with a partner of the firm to develop the flexible and expandable component methodology for implementing yield calcuation formulas for new types of financial instruments. The resulting report documents were delivered to the firm's clients upon legal review. Lotus 1-2-3 was the tool used for project management, listing required tasks, estimated delivery dates, and completion status.

 

§         2/90 – 8/91 at Price Waterhouse. Using the Revelation database on MS-DOS, I converted their entire proprietary Corporate Tax System used by many major Fortune-500 clients into the new version of the Revelation database. Also integrated this system with various client's legacy systems, including OS/390 and AS/400.

 

I was account manager, project leader, and senior developer, working with my wife Marilyn and one other consultant. The goal of this project was to convert the existing code in Rev version G into Advanced Revelation. We worked with the firm's staff to gather working versions of the source code.

Versatile System Solutions was a software development firm. Duties included: account manager, business analyst, system analyst, programming, training, and documentation. Accomplishments included:

 

§         10/85 – 1/86 at Engineered Coated Products, Inc. Using RM-COBOL on a network of CP/M computers, I was account manager, project leader, and senior developer, where I designed and programmed a manufacturing job estimating & costing package.

 

§         10/84 – 4/85 at Baxter Travenol. Using RM-COBOL on MS-DOS, I was a member of the team developing their Home Health Care Billing systems.

 

§         3/84 – 9/84 at First Chicago. Using NOMAD on IBM 3090 VM/CMS Mainframe systems, I assisted in the development of a Credit Exposure Information System that aggregated data from many systems at the bank for reporting to the federal Comptroller of the Currency.

 

§         10/83 – 12/83 at Motorola. Using NOMAD on IBM 3090 VM/CMS Mainframe systems, I was business analyst and developer, where I designed and programmed an International Currency Transaction Netting System.

 

 

5/81‑11/83                     Dun & Bradstreet Computer Services, Chicago, IL 60611.         Position: Applications Specialist.

 

DBCS Professional Services operated as consultants for large‑scale data processing systems, implemented either on DBCS' timesharing computer network or on‑site. Accomplishments included:

 

§         1/82 – 8/82 for Miller Brewing. Using NOMAD and COBOL on an IBM 3090 Mainframe with VOTRAX voice output and touch-tone phone input, I was part of the team that developed their National Sales Tracking system.

 

§         12/82 – 7/83 for Illinois Bell. Using NOMAD on IBM 3090 Mainframes, I was an analyst and developer as part of the team that developed their Product Sales and Commission Tracking system, allowing sales of all Bell products and services to be reported, and their sales commissions to be calculated.

 

4/80‑4/81                       Spectra Financial, Medicus, Evanston, IL 60202.                                         Position: Programmer

 

Spectra, a Data General OEM, marketed both medical and financial software systems to hospitals nationally. At the time, it had a DG Eclipse C‑350 Minicomputer. Accomplishments include:

 

§         Developing Scrolling on-line data entry screens for patient census data in DG-COBOL using the INFOS database.

 

§         Developing a source code converter that automatically converted RM-COBOL to DG-COBOL with screen sections built automatically.

 

 

7/79‑3/80                       Stat:Tab Inc., Chicago, IL.                                                               Position: Programmer Trainee

 

Stat:Tab was a service bureau marketing mainly to various government agencies. It had dual IBM 370/158's, running MVS and VM/CMS. It used COBOL and ADPAC for applications.
