Building a reliable, satisfactory, and maintainable software application on top of an imperfect data model is impossible. On the other hand, an perfect data model drastically simplifies application coding, which in turn reduces development and maintenance costs. It also makes possible enhancements (features) that would otherwise not be possible.
Extended relational analysis (ERA) is the the discipline of relational database design. I am an ERA fanatic who produces perfect, 100% accurate data models.
