Bruce Lueckenhoff
Summary:
13 years of data communications industry experience as both individual contributor and team leader, in both in-house development and consulting roles.
Specialties:
- Computer Networking system design and deployment, particularly IP routers and routing; (RIPv1/v2, OSPF, IGRP, EIGRP, IS-IS, BGP)
- Network Quality-of-Service (congestion management, packet queuing/scheduling: WFQ/CBWFQ/LLQ, packet marking, link fragmentation and interleaving, bandwidth estimation);
- Content Delivery Networks;
- Embedded systems design and programming (VxWorks, Linux, NetBSD, FreeBSD, proprietary (Cisco IOS, others);
- Data Link Protocols (PPP, MLPPP, Frame Relay, LAPB, HDLC, Cisco HDLC, MPLS);
- Network device driver, T1/E1 framer and signaling programming;
Experience:
Scalable Design LLC, (owner) August 2005 – Present
Created a computer networking software-oriented startup with products:
- Mftp Innovative network file distribution software. Mftp does in software, running on standard PCs and servers, what has traditionally required installing CDN (Content Distribution Network) dedicated hardware.
- UDP-Relay bridges othewise-isolated islands of multicast connectivity, and removes the need for full IP multicast routing. All in software, running on standard PCs and/or servers.
Cisco Systems (Software Engineer), May 2000 – August 2005
Worked in ITD (Internet Technologies Division) to maintain, extend and improve Cisco IOS Quality-of-Service software, particularly marking, congestion management and queueing. For example:
- Rewrote Weighted Fair Queueing (WFQ) packet scheduler, enabling the World Bank to deploy a global IP voice/video/data network, as documented in a customer success story
- Designed and implemented QoS-driven bandwidth estimation feature rolled out in Cisco IOS 12.4. Documented here
- Lead team providing "content routing" for Cisco ACNS CDN product.
- Contributed novel improvements to content routing, resulting in five patent applications to the USPTO.
Cadence Design Systems, (Member of Technical Staff),November 1997 – May 2000
Full-spectrum data communications design consulting.Provided system integration, software integration services as well as pre-packaged, ready-to-ship designs. For example:
- Led Software team and wrote an embedded kernel for a ARM7TDMI xDSL modem SoC (System On a Chip). This became the Efficient Networks SpeedStream 5260 and 5250 DSL bridges.
- Created a custom Frame Relay stack, and designed and implemented a Cisco-compatible "Cisco HDLC" data link layer, both for an Lucent IAD project.
- Ported IP multicast routing software ("mrouted" DVMRP) to existing router (Ascom Timeplex IAN-150)
- Wrote and packaged a VxWorks Board Support Package (BSP) for the ACE860 Motorola MPC860-based single board computer
Advanced Computer Communications (ACC) (Software Engineer), March 1993 – November 1997
Provided system-level technical leadership. For example:
- Software technical leader for "Tigris" remote access concentrator
- Software technical leader for "Colorado" access router
- improved software scalability, stability, portability
Tritek Systems (Intern), August 1991 – December 1992
Worked on OS-9 Software for paper mail letter sorting machine; a large, custom, multi-processor Motorola 680x0 VME chassis. Some highlights:
- Recovered software after entire SW department left company (with the sources)
- Placed software under version control (RCS)
- Enhanced optical barcode recognition software to work with 9- and 11-digit ZIP codes
- Wrote custom letter sorting application for Wachovia Bank
Education
- CCNA (Cisco-Certified Networking Associate, exam date 2006-5-17).
- University of Delaware, Masters, Computer and Information Sciences, August 1990 – December 1992
- University of Tennessee, graduate work, Computer Science, August 1989 – May 1990
- Cornell College, Bachelor of Arts, Computer Science, August 1985 – May 1989
